Using a ChatGPT subscription with HigherCoach

A workspace can run its analysis on a ChatGPT subscription instead of an API key. Read this before you connect one.

How it works

  • You sign in with the same device code flow OpenAI's Codex command line tool uses: HigherCoach shows a short code, you enter it at OpenAI while signed in to your ChatGPT account, and OpenAI gives HigherCoach a token for your account.
  • HigherCoach stores that token, and the refresh token that renews it, encrypted. Only the last four characters are ever shown.
  • Each analysis is then sent to OpenAI through the Codex service, as if you had run it in Codex yourself.
  • The sign-in inside the app is not available yet. Until it is, HigherOps support connects a subscription with you, using the same flow.

What you are agreeing to

  • OpenAI does not offer this for third-party apps. OpenAI provides no official way for another product to use a ChatGPT subscription, and it may stop accepting these tokens at any time, or restrict or suspend an account that uses them this way. Using it is your choice, under your agreement with OpenAI. [REVIEW: wording of the risk statement]
  • If OpenAI rejects the token, HigherCoach marks the connection as rejected, stops sending analyses to it, and emails your workspace admins. No transcript or earlier analysis is lost: connect an API key (Anthropic, OpenAI or OpenRouter) in the integration settings, and new calls are analysed with it. A workspace admin can analyse again, from its page, a call that could not be analysed meanwhile.
  • Costs. Your subscription pays for the usage, under your plan's limits. HigherCoach shows usage at the list price of the equivalent API calls so the spend cap and usage page still mean something; HigherOps does not bill you for it.

Keeping your conversations out of OpenAI's training

Whether OpenAI may use your conversations to improve its models is a setting in your ChatGPT account, not in HigherCoach. To turn it off:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT with the account you connect.
  2. Open your profile, then Settings, then Data controls.
  3. Switch off "Improve the model for everyone".

OpenAI describes the setting, and what it covers, in its own help article: Data Controls FAQ. OpenAI may move or rename the setting; the help article is the current source. Business and Enterprise workspaces have their own defaults, set by their ChatGPT admin.

Switching away

In the integration settings, connect another provider and make it the active one, then remove the ChatGPT connection. Removing it deletes the stored tokens.
